Una ciudad que recuerda el legado del santo de Asís
José Bernardo Iturraspe no pensó en él para nombrar a la población que fundó. Pero San Francisco de Asís fue inspiración para el Papa. Sus valores trascendieron todos los tiempos.
La feligresía católica recuerda hoy a San Francisco de Asís, patrono de nuestra ciudad, una de las figuras más emblemáticas de la cristiandad.
José Bernardo Iturraspe no pensó en el santo de Asís para nombrar a la población que fundó. En efecto, se trató de un homenaje a su hermano Francisco, uno de los doce hijos del matrimonio conformado por José Demetrio Iturraspe y Carmen Freyre Rodríguez del Fresno.
En aquella época - y aun hoy algunas familias mantienen esta tradición - se le ponía al hijo nacido el nombre del santo que coincidía con su fecha de parto, y así le pasó a Francisco Iturraspe. Nació, precisamente, el día en que se recuerda a San Francisco de Asís. Su fallecimiento, el 14 de abril de 1878, se produjo en circunstancias confusas durante un alzamiento denominado Revolución Grande contra el entonces gobernador de Santa Fe, Simón de Iriondo.
Es decir, aunque el hermano fallecido del fundador fue el motivo inicial del nombre de nuestra ciudad, éste llevaba el nombre del santo que desde Asís promovió un mensaje de amor y humildad que trascendió los tiempos.
Giovanni di Pietro Bernardone nació en 1182 en la ciudad de Asís, Italia. Pertenecía a una familia económicamente privilegiada, pero decidió renunciar a la herencia en señal de austeridad. Se destacó por su humildad y el desinterés por lo material, lo que constituyó su camino para acercarse a Dios.
Fue el creador de las Tres Órdenes,instituciones religiosas que siguen un marcado lineamiento espiritual. La primera fue fundada en 1209 con el nombre de los Hermanos Menores y aún existe en la actualidad con la premisa de “abandonarse totalmente a Dios, profesando la obediencia, la pobreza y la castidad”.
Junto a Chiara Offreduccio, conocida como Santa Clara de Asís, en 1212 fundó la segunda, que se denominó Orden de las Damas Pobres y las Clarisas. En 1221 dio nacimiento a la última, nombrada como la Orden Franciscana Seglar.
Francisco murió el 3 de octubre de 1226, a los 44 años. El 16 de julio de 1228 fue canonizado durante el papado de Gregorio IX. Sus restos descansan en la Basílica de San Francisco de Asís.
Inspirado en su mensaje de humildad y confraternidad con la Creación, el primer papa latinoamericano de la historia lleva su nombre. En su Encíclica Laudato Sí, “Sobre el cuidado de la casa común” Francisco traza un perfil del santo de Asís y evoca su pasión por la naturaleza.
Afirma el Papa: “Alabado seas, mi Señor”, cantaba san Francisco de Asís. En ese hermoso cántico nos recordaba que nuestra casa común es también como una hermana, con la cual compartimos la existencia, y como una madre bella que nos acoge entre sus brazos: Alabado seas, mi Señor, por la hermana nuestra madre tierra, la cual nos sustenta, y gobierna y produce diversos frutos con coloridas flores y hierba”
El Pontífice expresa en ese texto su convencimiento de que “Francisco es el ejemplo por excelencia del cuidado de lo que es débil y de una ecología integral, vivida con alegría y autenticidad. Es el santo patrono de todos los que estudian y trabajan en torno a la ecología, amado también por muchos que no son cristianos. Él manifestó una atención particular hacia la creación de Dios y hacia los más pobres y abandonados. Amaba y era amado por su alegría, su entrega generosa, su corazón universal. Era un místico y un peregrino que vivía con simplicidad y en una maravillosa armonía con Dios, con los otros, con la naturaleza y consigo mismo. En él se advierte hasta qué punto son inseparables la preocupación por la naturaleza, la justicia con los pobres, el compromiso con la sociedad y la paz interior”.
