El "Peque", ubicado en el puesto 26 del ranking, cayó con Kohlschreiber (34 del mundo) en una hora y 54 minutos de juego. En el segundo set salvó dos match points en el tie break, pero en el tercero no pudo y el alemán cerró su victoria en dos parciales.
El porteño había vencido en el debut al italiano Fabio Fognini por 6-1, 2-6 y 6-2 y luego en la segunda ronda logró otro buen triunfo sobre el español Pablo Carreño Busta, número 11 del mundo y cuarto favorito, por 5-7, 6-1 y 6-1.
Kohlschreiber enfrentará en semifinales al francés Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (15), que sorprendió al máximo favorito, el alemán Alexander Zverev (5) al derrotarlo por 7-6 (6) y 6-2.
