Historias Extraordinarias de San Justo
Exiliado en San Francisco
Gustavo Navarro, o Tristán Marof, uno de los principales intelectuales de la izquierda boliviana. Fue perseguido y encarcelado, por lo que vivió eyectado de país en país.

Gustavo Navarro nació en Sucre, Bolivia, el 10 de febrero de 1898. Y murió en su país, Santa Cruz de la Sierra, festejando su cumpleaños número 81, en el año 1979. Allí, en la ciudad de los anillos, cerró su propio círculo, después de mucho andar.
De acuerdo con una investigación de María Inés Dellavale para Pacarina del Sur, Navarro vivió en movimiento, muchas veces entrando y saliendo de los lugares de manera clandestina.
Se había recibido de abogado en la universidad de San Francisco Xavier en Sucre. Adhirió al movimiento opositor al liberalismo, confluyendo en el Partido Republicano que llevó en 1920 a Bautista Saavedra a la presidencia. Obtuvo un cargo diplomático en Le Havre, Francia, donde profundizó sus vínculos con intelectuales y políticos. Luego se desempeñó en Italia y Escocia. Mientras tanto, publicó tres libros, adoptando el seudónimo de Tristán Marof, quizá para evitar conflictos de intereses con su rol público. Entre sus reclamos fundamentales figuraba la denuncia frente a Chile por la salida al mar de su país natal y la revindicación aborígen.
En Europa, además, dijo haber sido amigo de Miguel de Unamuno, José Ortega y Gasset, entre otros.
Regresó del Viejo Continente en 1926 y habría rechazado diferentes cargos. Luego de un mayor acercamiento al marxismo y a la experiencia del comunismo ruso, Marof integró la organización del Partido Socialista Máximo. Su lucha contra los capitales económicos, puntualmente por la nacionalización de la explotación minera (teniendo como némesis al magnate Simón Patiño, entre otros), lo llevó a ser perseguido. Despreciaba a los intelectuales de puro abordaje teórico. Él se consideraba un soldado, no necesariamente por empuñar las armas, sino por poner el cuerpo.
Tristán fue encarcelado, pero logró huir y salir de forma clandestina de Bolivia. A partir de allí comenzó su peregrinaje como exiliado. Pasó por Perú, Panamá y Cuba, donde también tuvo conflictos con las autoridades y debió escapar. Estuvo en México entre 1928 y 1930, muy generosa por entonces con los desarraigados de Latinoamérica. Allí ejerció como periodista, profesor e investigador. Se vinculó a Socorro Rojo Internacional y al Partido Comunista, proscrito desde finales de 1929. Por todo ello, sumado a sus artículos críticos hacia el gobierno mexicano, también sufrió una breve detención y tuvo que dejar este país a las apuradas. Se radicó brevemente en Estados Unidos.
De aquellos años afirmaba haberse relacionado con Diego Rivera, César Vallejo, Pablo Neruda, Alfonso Reyes, por mencionar unos pocos.
Por vínculos ya desarrollados con medios y distintos personajes de Argentina, como el diario Crítica de Natalio Botana, decidió mudarse a nuestro país.
La Argentina infame
Su estancia en Argentina se dio fundamentalmente entre 1930 y 1936, entablando relaciones con intelectuales, políticos y artistas, aunando esfuerzos para combatir el capital, el imperialismo. Aquí editó dos libros y buscó apoyos para oponerse a la guerra del Chaco entre su Bolivia y Paraguay.
En su llegada al país lo aguardaba el inicio de la década infame post golpe de Estado contra Hipólito Yrigoyen, con un clima de especial urticaria hacia toda idea o acción revolucionaria. Marof no demoró en caer detenido por unas tres semanas, hasta que lo invitaron gentilmente a radicarse en Montevideo, Uruguay, que siempre había sabido ser un buen anfitrión para quienes llegaban huyendo desde la otra ribera del Plata.
El intelectual boliviano cruzó luego a Brasil para acercarse a la frontera con su país, ya en plena campaña por evitar el inicio de la Guerra del Chaco. Luego volvería a la Argentina a través de Jujuy, donde fundó el diario homónimo para difundir sus ideas, que volvieron a granjearle la antipatía de los gobiernos de su patria natal y de la adoptiva. Se acostumbró a vivir con las autoridades respirándole sobre el hombro. Una vez más, volvió a pasar por la cárcel y la deportación. Perseguido, transitó por Tucumán, Santiago del Estero y Buenos Aires, hasta su radicación en Córdoba, donde halló algo de paz por un año y medio.
En la Docta trabó relación con intelectuales como Deodoro Roca, de cuyo periódico “Flecha” fue un asiduo colaborador. Fundó el grupo revolucionario Túpac Amaru, que luego confluiría en el Partido Obrero Revolucionario. En esos años, en los que residió también en Totoral, publicó dos libros, “La Tragedia del Altiplano” (1935) y “Habla un condenado a muerte” (1936).
Marof volvió a ser detenido y deportado a Bolivia en 1936. Acusó que pesaba sobre él una sentencia de muerte. Estando preso en Tupiza, ni siquiera se le permitía el contacto con su familia. Pero diversas reacciones críticas y movilizaciones lograron que fuera devuelto a la Argentina.
El vínculo con San Francisco
El intelectual boliviano fue reservado con respecto a su vida privada, pero supo contar que tuvo dos matrimonios y tres hijos varones, uno que vivía en La Paz y los restantes en Buenos Aires.
Su segundo enlace fue con Ercilia Chana, hija de Aquilino Chana, inmigrante español, fotógrafo y artista plástico de San Francisco. Marof había estado presumiblemente por primera vez en nuestra ciudad brindando una conferencia el 6 de julio de 1935. Según el investigador Roberto Ferrero, incluso fue detenido brevemente por las autoridades locales, y una vez liberado dio un discurso en el Teatro Avenida (donde actualmente se encuentra la Asistencia Pública, tal como confirma el historiador Arturo Bienedell).
Este último consigna que aquí se vinculó también con Eugenio Savino, médico, luego intendente radical, el ya mencionado Aquilino Chana, el dirigente comunista Francisco Mana, el fotógrafo Rogelio Risso, el periodista Marcelo Amsler (exdirector de LA VOZ DE SAN JUSTO), y con el círculo de artistas encabezados por Miguel Borgarello, muchos de ellos también afines a las ideas socialistas, y no sería de extrañar que el rostro del escritor haya perdurado en algún cuadro del pintor, algo que solía hacer con sus amistades.
En su investigación, a partir de información proporcionada por el mismo Bienedell, Dellavale estima que las nupcias con la mayor de las Chana se habría producido en abril de 1936, luego del regreso de Marof. No se descarta que su afinidad con la ciudad pueda haberse debido también al gobierno de fuerte raigambre popular del español Serafín Trigueros de Godoy, quien acababa de culminar su cuarto mandato como intendente en febrero del mismo año.
Ferrero también consigna que el regreso del intelectual socialista se habría dado entre marzo y abril de 1936, donde se arregló la boda con Chana, que tuvo lugar en Córdoba el 18 de abril.
Bienedell añade que en la época no faltaron burlas hacia el escritor boliviano por haber “sucumbido” al amor con la descendiente de una familia que podría considerarse burguesa, en una tierra como la sanfrancisqueña también en general vista de ese modo.
No obstante, Navarro regresó a su Bolivia con su familia entre 1937 y 1938, donde continuó su labor política y literaria, recibiendo la visita esporádica de policías, nuevos confinamientos y expulsiones. Salvó su vida por los pelos en alguna que otra ocasión. Su segunda esposa lo acompañó, soportando esta vida errante y de tensión permanente con las autoridades. Era pintora y hacía trabajos repujados en cuero. Hasta que enfermó y terminó regresando a Argentina en 1950. Marof se quedó viviendo solo hasta su muerte, como un lobo estepario, en humildad rayana a la pobreza, con auxilio eventual de algún amigo. Y se lo despidió como a uno de los primeros en plantar bandera socialista en Bolivia.
En el Centro Cultural y Biblioteca Popular de San Francisco todavía puede rastrearse alguno de los ejemplares, como “La Tragedia del Altiplano”, escritos en la época en que este intelectual tuvo a nuestra ciudad como refugio.
Por su vida de nómade, plagada de avatares, caídas, encierros y vueltas a empezar, muchos de quienes desde entonces analizaron su figura y su obra recayeron varias veces en la misma comparación: Tristán Marof, el “Quijote” de la política.
